Motion caught my attention above and to our left, over Mustang’s head. A row of four pipes ran parallel along the ceiling, but not right up against it. The gap between the pipes and the ceiling was not quite as wide as the space under the steel slab that a rat bastard had tried to drag Trix under. Even as I looked, a rat bastard leapt out at Mustang. It was pure luck that Dave had just moved back so I could lunge in, catch it by a front leg and slam it on the ground, then put a bullet through its skull.

“Badge, we’ve got ammo!” Dave yelled. “My glove’s good! My weapon’s hot!”

“Stay on reload!” I ordered.

As if saying it made it happen, Bulletstopper yelled, “Reload!” Dave took the weapon from her and handed her his so she could resume firing. I continued firing, but kept glancing up at those pipes. It was too narrow for rat bastards to come more than one at a time and too tight for them to come very fast. I was tempted to open fire on the pipes and just cut off the approach, but remembered how important pipes were in the lower level back at Base Arsenal, so I held back.

Mustang yelled, “Reload!” He received a loaded weapon in exchange.

The rat bastards were piled two-thirds of the way to the ceiling. It actually helped, giving a little warning, because the dead ones would start to slip and slide when live ones were scrambling over them, so we could fire shorter bursts, or even single shots to take them out. A red LED started blinking in my scope, warning me that I was getting low on ammunition, but Trinity yelled, “Reload!” In my peripheral vision, I saw her exchange her weapon for the one Dave held, and I tried to conserve my firepower, using single shots, until it dry fired.

“Reload!” I held it out and Dave took it, but did not give me another weapon. It was perfect timing that another rat bastard jumped off those pipes.
