Kilpack's Dystopian Military Sci-Fi Novel Battle Calm Named Finalist in Utah Book AwardsWest Jordan, Uta. — Battle Calm by award-winning Utah author W.D. Kilpack III is one of five finalists in the Utah Book Awards in the Speculative Fiction category. Program Manager Kase Johnstun, Utah Center for the Book, said, "I want to thank all who submitted their books to the 2025 Utah Book Awards! There were so many amazing submissions in all categories. Your work highlights the depth of Utah’s literary landscape. If your book was not selected as a 2025 Notable Read [Finalist], please know that the competition was very steep and this is no reflection on your writing! Our judges struggled to narrow these lists down to get to our notable reads." According to the Utah Book Awards Web site, an award is given based on the strength of the publication’s literary merit, lasting importance, and overall quality. The Utah Book Awards is a project of The Utah Center for the Book at Utah Humanities (an affiliate of The Library of Congress Center), the Utah Division of Arts & Museums, the Utah State Library Division, and The League of Utah Writers. Kilpack said, "I will never get tired of hearing from readers who work. So much goes into writing a novel, let alone a trilogy, and having a little appreciation shown goes a long way in making it feel worthwhile!" Winners for each category, General Fiction, Speculative Fiction, General Nonfiction, Memoir/Narrative Nonfiction, Illustrated, Young Adult/Middle Grade Readers, and Poetry, will be announced by July 15, 2025, with hopes to have an award ceremony during the Utah Humanities Book Festival in October 2025. This year's competition was judged by a panel of seven judges, including

To be eligible for competition, the entries had to be written by permanent residents of Utah, and published between Jan. 1, 2022, and Oct. 1, 2024. According to Sinister Soup podcast co-founder, Clay Vermulm, "Bill [Kilpack] is a wonderful man who works extremely hard on his craft. Kilpack delivers a stunning blow to the belief that Indie-Fantasy is worth any less that its salt [with] well-crafted epic[s] with unique plot mechanisms, well-developed and believable characters, and a world grounded in the visceral and the real." Reviews of Battle Calm • 5/5 Stars — "Battle Calm is a dystopian military science fiction novel that explores the life of soldiers entrenched in perpetual war. The story revolves around Badger, the successor of his father, Red Skin, as the Keeper Base Leader. Badger is a complex character — renowned as a skilled tactician and fighter, he navigates a relentless world governed by the unyielding Red Skin’s Laws, which assert that war is humanity’s perpetual state. The narrative dives deep into the psyches of its characters, illustrating the psychological toll of endless combat and the fragile bonds formed among comrades. The book’s intense action sequences and vividly detailed world-building are highlights. Kilpack immerses the reader in the brutal realities of dystopian warfare, where moments of calm between battles carry their own form of tension and danger. The thematic exploration of war’s cyclical nature and its dehumanizing effects offers thought-provoking insights, making it more than just an action-driven tale. Not just the protagonist but the emotional depth of characters like Trinity and Korry, also bring additional dimensions to the narrative as Badger's loyal allies. Fans of hard military science fiction and dystopian sagas will likely find Battle Calm a rewarding, intense, and reflective read. It balances relentless action with philosophical underpinnings." — Jasveer Singh Dangi, author of The Hunter Genesis About Kilpack Kilpack is an award-winning and critically acclaimed science-fiction and fantasy author, with works appearing in print, online, radio and television.
